Requirement: Stabilisation & Erosion Control for 45° Slope
Client: GM Midlands Ltd – Contractor
Location: Kings Heath Station Birmingham
Issue
As part of recent construction works at Kings Heath Railway Station, embankments were created to accommodate necessary land modifications. One particular slope was engineered at a steep 45-degree angle to maximise space for additional car parking. While structurally stable, the exposed soil surface was at risk of erosion due to the elements. Without effective slope stabilisation and erosion control, the soil could be displaced, making it difficult for vegetation to take root and leading to ongoing maintenance challenges.
Challenges
- Steep Gradient – The 45-degree incline made it difficult to establish and maintain vegetation without additional stabilisation.
- Soil Erosion – Without reinforcement, rainfall and wind could wash away the soil, leading to sediment runoff and increased maintenance.
- Drainage Issues – Poor water management could contribute to further erosion and increased drainage costs.
- Aesthetic and Environmental Concerns – The client wanted a solution that would support plant growth and blend naturally into the surroundings.
Solution
To tackle these challenges, Grassmats’ Terram Geocell 150mm deep was chosen as the ideal erosion control solution. The Geocells were selected because they:
- Reinforce and Stabilise the Soil – The cellular structure locks soil in place, preventing movement even on steep slopes.
- Promote Drainage and Root Growth – The open design allows water to drain efficiently while providing air circulation, helping plants to establish strong roots.
- Reduce Maintenance and Long-Term Costs – With erosion under control, there is no need for costly clean-ups or ongoing soil replacement.
- Support Sustainable Landscaping – The system enables long-term plant growth, creating an eco-friendly, green space that enhances the site’s appearance.
Implementation
The Geocells were securely installed on the embankment and filled with soil to create a stable growing medium. Grass seed and shrubs were then planted within the cells, ensuring they could take root effectively. The system was designed to work in harmony with the station’s drainage setup, preventing water runoff while encouraging healthy plant growth.

Benefits
- Long-Term Slope Stability – The reinforced embankment stays secure in all weather conditions.
- Reduced Erosion and Maintenance Costs – Soil stays in place, cutting down on the need for repairs and clean-ups.
- Sustainable and Green Appearance – Over time, the slope will become a thriving, vegetated area that fits naturally into the environment.
- Improved Drainage – Water is managed effectively, preventing pooling and reducing pressure on existing drainage systems.
- Enhanced Biodiversity – The embankment provides a habitat for local plant life, contributing to the wider ecosystem.
Conclusion
By utilising Grassmats’ Terram Geocell 150mm, Kings Heath Railway Station has successfully stabilised its embankment while creating a green and sustainable landscape. This solution not only provides immediate erosion control but also ensures long-term plant growth, improving both function and aesthetics.
