Garden Play Areas

Our garden play area products are designed to improve safety, drainage and grass protection beneath and around outdoor play equipment. Playground Safety Grass Mats have been tested in accordance with BS EN 1177 and can provide critical fall height protection up to 3 metres when installed over a suitable supporting surface. Our 22mm grass mat rolls can cover larger surrounding areas with fewer joins, while 16mm rubber grass mats may be suitable for paths and areas outside equipment fall zones. The matting can help to reduce mud, surface wear and standing water while allowing grass to grow through. Product selection must reflect the equipment fall height and free-fall area, with correct installation and regular inspection essential.

Garden Play Area FAQs

What type of matting is best for a garden play area? For raised play equipment where impact attenuation is required, use the 22mm Playground Safety Grass Mats. They have been tested in accordance with BS EN 1177 on a suitable grass sub-base. The chosen surface and installation must be appropriate for the equipment's critical fall height and free-fall area.

Can the mats be laid over existing grass?Yes, provided the grass is established and the ground is reasonably firm, level and well drained. Fill hollows, remove stones and address drainage before installation. The mats must be securely pegged and joined so that edges cannot lift or create a trip hazard.

Are 16mm rubber grass mats suitable beneath play equipment? The 16mm mats are intended for garden paths, light pedestrian areas and general lawn protection. They are not presented as impact-attenuating safety surfacing. Use the 22mm Playground Safety Grass Mats where fall protection is required.

How much of the area around the equipment should be covered? The required free-fall area depends on the type and height of the equipment. Follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions and any relevant safety guidance rather than covering only the point directly beneath a swing, slide or climbing frame.

Solution #1: Playground Safety Grass Mats

Our 22mm Playground Safety Grass Mats are the main option for domestic garden play equipment where impact attenuation and grass protection are required. Their open rubber structure allows grass to grow through while providing a durable, free-draining surface around swings, slides and climbing frames.

When installed over a suitable grass sub-base, the mats have been tested in accordance with BS EN 1177 and achieved critical fall height performance up to 3 metres under the tested conditions. The equipment height, free-fall area, sub-base and installation must all be checked for the specific site.

Solution #2: 22mm Grass Mat Rolls

22mm Rubber Grass Mat Rolls are useful for wider surrounding play areas, garden routes and heavily used grass where fewer joins are preferred. The roll format helps protect the lawn from repeated foot traffic while retaining drainage and allowing grass growth.

These rolls should not automatically be treated as certified safety surfacing beneath raised equipment. Use the dedicated Playground Safety Grass Mats, or confirm the relevant test documentation, wherever impact attenuation is required.

Solution #3: 16mm Rubber Grass Mats

16mm Rubber Grass Mats can protect garden paths, seating areas and low-level activity spaces where general lawn reinforcement is needed. They provide a lighter-duty option for pedestrian use and help reduce mud and surface wear.

They are not marketed as impact-attenuating surfacing and should not be selected beneath raised play equipment where a critical fall height requirement applies.

Problems & Solutions

The grass beneath the swings or climbing frame is becoming muddyPlayground Safety Grass Mats can protect established grass and spread repeated foot traffic where the underlying ground is firm and adequately drained. Deep mud, standing water or badly rutted ground should be corrected before installation.

I want the play area to retain a natural garden appearanceThe open cells allow grass to grow through the mats so the surface can blend into the lawn over time. Grass establishement still requires suitable soil, light, moisture and regular mowing or trimming.

Product FAQs

Should I choose 16mm or 22mm mats?Choose the 22mm Playground Safety Grass Mats for raised play equipment and higher-traffic play zones, subject to the required critical fall height. Use 16mm mats for general paths and non-fall areas where impact attenuation is not required.

Do the mats replace drainage or ground preparation? No. Matting cannot correct an unstable, deeply muddy or poorly drained site. The ground should be level and firm, with any drainage problem addressed before the mats are secured.

“These mats are just what we needed for the play area in our garden - a great improvement on bark and our grandsons give them the thumbs up. Even though we are grandparents, we were able to lay them easily.”
