Slope Stabilisation

Our slope stabilisation products are designed to help control erosion, confine infill and support suitable vegetation on sloping ground. Terram HDPE geocells form a three-dimensional cellular structure that can retain soil or aggregate, while T1000 geotextile may be used where separation and filtration are required. Geocell U-pins can also help secure expanded panels during installation. The correct cell depth, infill and anchorage depend on the slope gradient, soil conditions, drainage and project loading. Steep, retaining, public or safety-critical slopes should be designed or approved by a suitably qualified engineer.

Slope Stabilisation FAQs

How do geocells help stabilise a slope?HDPE geocells form a three-dimensional cellular structure that confines soil, aggregate or another specified infill. On a suitably designed slope, this can help limit surface movement and erosion while distributing loads across the reinforced area.

Can geocells be installed on any slope?No. Suitability depends on the gradient, soil conditions, drainage, loading, anchorage and the consequences of failure. Steep, retaining, public or structurally critical slopes should be designed or approved by a suitably qualified engineer.

Which geocell depth should I choose?The correct cell depth depends on the slope, infill, ground conditions and design loads. Grassmats stocks 100mm, 150mm and 200mm Terram HDPE geocells, but the depth should not be selected from gradient alone. Follow the project specification or contact us with the site details.

How are geocells installed on a slope?The slope should be prepared and drainage addressed before the panels are expanded, anchored and filled from the crest downwards in accordance with the design. Pin quantities and anchorage requirements vary significantly with the slope angle, soil and loading.

Solution #1: HDPE Geocells

Terram HDPE Geocells create a three-dimensional confinement system that holds soil, stone or another specified infill within individual cells. On suitable slopes, this can help reduce surface erosion, limit downslope movement and create a stable growing medium for vegetation.

We stock 100mm, 150mm and 200mm cell depths in different panel formats. The correct product and anchorage arrangement must be selected for the site conditions and project design.

Solution #2: Geotextile Separation Layers

Terram T1000 Geotextile can be used where the project design requires separation and filtration beneath a geocell system. It helps prevent selected infill from mixing with the underlying soil while allowing water to pass through.

A geotextile does not stabilise a slope by itself. Whether it is required, and how it should be detailed, depends on the ground conditions, drainage strategy and engineering design.

Solution #3: Geocell U-Pins and Anchorage

Geocell U-pins help hold expanded panels in position during installation and form part of the anchorage system on suitable slopes. They are manufactured from 8mm steel and measure 100mm x 550mm.

The required number, spacing and anchorage method are site-specific. U-pins should not be treated as a universal slope design, particularly on steep slopes, weak ground or locations where failure could create a safety risk.

Which geocell depth is best for my project?There is no universal depth for slope work. Cell depth should be selected from the project specification or after considering the gradient, soil, infill, drainage, loading and anchorage. Contact us with the project details if you need help identifying the relevant product.

How many U-pins will I need?Pin quantities vary significantly according to panel size, gradient, soil strength, crest anchorage and the project design. Do not use a generic pin rate for a steep or safety-critical slope.

How long does delivery take?We stock our geocells, T1000 geotextile and geocell U-pins in Congleton, Cheshire. Standard and premium delivery options are available, subject to stock and order size. Collection can also be selected at checkout.
