Mud Control

Our mud control products are designed to reduce surface churn and protect suitable outdoor areas such as gardens, paths, gateways and animal areas. Our rubber grass mats and grass mat rolls provide a permeable surface for soft or frequently used grassed ground, while temporary access mats offer a more robust, reusable option for short-term pedestrian, equipment or vehicle routes where the ground and installation are suitable. Product choice depends on the traffic, duration and ground condition. These products do not replace engineered hard-standing and should not be laid directly over deep, unstable mud, badly rutted ground or persistent standing water without appropriate drainage and ground preparation.

Mud Control FAQs

How do I stop grass and soil from becoming muddy? The right solution depends on how soft the ground is and how it will be used. Rubber grass mats suit soft, frequently used grassed areas. Temporary access mats are the more robust option for short-term pedestrian, equipment or vehicle routes, provided the ground is suitably prepared.

Can grass grow through mud control mats?Yes. Open-cell rubber grass mats and rolls allow grass to grow through the surface. Temporary access mats create a solid temporary route and are intended to be lifted after use rather than left for grass to grow through.

Which mud control product should I choose?Choose rubber grass mats for smaller soft or frequently used grassed areas, grass mat rolls for longer paths and larger coverage, and temporary access mats for short-term routes carrying heavier pedestrian, equipment or vehicle traffic. The correct choice depends on the ground strength, load and duration.

Can I install the products on existing mud?The ground should be made reasonably level and stable before installation. Very deep mud, standing water or badly rutted ground may require drainage, infill or other preparation first. Product-specific installation guides are available on each listing, and our team can advise on unusual sites.

Solution #1: Rubber Grass Mats

Rubber grass mats are a robust option for muddy gateways, garden paths, animal areas and other high-traffic ground. The open-cell design creates a firmer surface while allowing grass to grow through. Choose 16mm mats for lighter domestic use or 22mm mats where greater cushioning and durability are needed.

Solution #2: Rubber Grass Mat Rolls

Grass mat rolls provide the same open-cell rubber surface in longer sections, making them particularly useful for paths, tracks and larger muddy areas. Fewer joins can reduce fitting time and the number of cable ties required, especially on long, narrow routes.

Solution #3: Temporary Access Mats

Temporary access mats are connectable boards for short-term pedestrian, equipment and vehicle routes across suitable grass, soil, gravel or hardstanding. They provide a more robust reusable surface where rubber grass matting is not appropriate for the expected load.

Each board measures 1.2m x 0.8m x 22mm and may support loads up to 20 tonnes, subject to ground conditions and correct installation. They should not be used to bridge deep, bog-like or structurally unstable ground without suitable preparation.

Common Mud Problems

My garden path or gateway turns to mud in wet weatherRubber grass mats or grass mat rolls are usually the strongest choice for soft, regularly used ground. They create a more stable surface while their open cells allow grass to re-establish through the matting.

Pets or livestock are wearing away the grassFor dog runs, paddock gateways and areas around shelters or feeders, rubber grass mats or gateway mats are normally the most suitable options for soft or heavily worn ground. Where machinery or vehicles need short-term access, temporary access mats may be appropriate after the route has been assessed and prepared.

Product FAQs

Which product is best for deep mud?No mat should simply be laid over unstable, deeply churned ground without preparation. Level and firm the area first, then use 22mm rubber grass mats or a grass mat roll for a robust surface. Where drainage or the base remains unsuitable, further ground preparation may be required.

How do I install mud control matting?Installation varies by product and site. Rubber mats are normally linked with cable ties and secured with suitable pegs. Temporary access mats are laid over a checked, suitably firm route and joined using compatible connectors.

Please follow the installation guide on the product page or contact us for advice before installing on slopes, deep mud or vehicle routes.
