Grass reinforcement mesh can protect established grass from seasonal or regular vehicle use, depending on the grade selected, while Bodpave permeable paving provides a more permanent solution for frequently used pitches and access areas over a suitable sub-base. Our temporary access mats may also be suitable for short-term routes. These products can help to reduce rutting, mud and grass wear, but they are not a remedy for deep mud or unstable ground without appropriate preparation. Vehicle weight, wheel loads, turning movements and drainage should all be considered before installation.

Can I park a caravan or motorhome on reinforced grass?Grass reinforcement mesh can help protect established, reasonably firm grass from occasional or regular vehicle use when the correct grade is selected and the turf has fully grown through the mesh. It is not suitable for bare mud, deeply rutted ground or persistently waterlogged areas, where the mesh and vehicle may sink.
Which grass reinforcement mesh grade should I choose?Medium 13mm mesh is intended for seasonal or infrequent vehicle loading. Heavy 14.5mm mesh is the stronger option for more regular access or parking. Caravan and motorhome weights vary considerably, so the vehicle weight, frequency of use, ground strength and drainage should all be considered before ordering.
What is best for a permanent caravan or motorhome pitch?For a permanent or frequently used pitch, a properly constructed permeable paving system such as Bodpave is generally more appropriate than surface-laid mesh. Bodpave 40 suits lighter and intermittent vehicle use, while Bodpave 85 is intended for more frequent or demanding traffic. Both require a suitable engineered sub-base.
Can I install the products directly onto soft mud?No. Grass reinforcement mesh needs established grass and firm ground, while Bodpave requires excavation and a suitable sub-base. Temporary access mats can provide short-term surface protection, but their performance also depends on the strength and level of the ground beneath them.

Solution #1: Grass Reinforcement Mesh

Grass reinforcement mesh can help protect established grass used for caravan or motorhome access and parking. Once the grass has grown through and integrated with the mesh, the surface is better able to distribute vehicle loads and resist rutting while retaining a natural grass finish.

Medium 13mm mesh is suited to seasonal or infrequent use, while Heavy 14.5mm mesh is designed for more regular vehicle traffic. The ground must already be reasonably firm, level and well drained. Mesh should not be laid over bare mud or unstable ground as a quick cure for sinking.

Solution #2: Bodpave Permeable Paving

Bodpave cellular paving is the more suitable option for permanent pitches, regular vehicle access and areas where surface-laid mesh would not provide enough support. The interlocking grids are installed over a correctly designed sub-base and can be filled with gravel or grass, depending on the project.

Bodpave 40 is intended for lighter to moderate vehicle applications, while Bodpave 85 is the heavier-duty option for more frequent traffic. The load capacity comes from the complete pavement construction, not the grid alone, so suitable ground preparation is essential.

Solution #3: Temporary Access Mats

Temporary access mats can create a short-term protected route over grass, gravel, soil or hardstanding for moving a caravan or motorhome onto or off a site. Their raised surface improves traction and the connectable boards can be arranged to suit the required route.

They are not intended as a permanent caravan pitch or as a substitute for proper drainage and ground preparation. On very soft or saturated ground, the boards may still move or sink, so the underlying conditions must be assessed before use.

Product FAQs

Can I use stabiliser legs or a jockey wheel directly on mesh?These create concentrated point loads and may damage the grass or push into the ground. Use suitable load-spreading pads on a firm, level base. Grass reinforcement mesh should not be treated as a structural support for stabiliser legs or jockey wheels.
Can I drive over grass reinforcement mesh immediately after installation?No. The mesh must be securely pinned and the grass must be allowed to grow through and integrate with it before vehicle use. Newly seeded areas need a full establishment period, which depends on the season and growing conditions.
