Bodpave Systems For Driveways

Bodpave Systems For Driveways

What Are Bodpave Systems?

Bodpave cellular paving systems are a type of interlocking porous ground reinforcement grid that are often used to create stable, permeable paving for grass or gravel areas such as car parks. The linked cellular paving grids ensure structural support and durability where vehicles, pedestrians or landscaping features need a reinforced surface.

How Do They Work?

These systems consist of interlocking cellular grids that snap together to form a continuous surface, which is able to resist lateral movement. The open design of the pavers allows water to drain through the surface naturally, helping to manage any surface water issues. When they are filled with grass seed, soil or gravel, the grids are able to double up as a ground reinforcement solution by providing support and load distribution.

Our Bodpave 40 models are manufactured in the UK from 100% stabilised recyclable and recycled polymers. Suitable for a gravel finish, they are designed with the capabilities of managing high traffic over long periods of time, ideal for car parks.

How They Benefit Driveways

With their numerous design advantages and materials used, pave systems carry a host of benefits which support a number of environments, from driveways, to cycle paths, to disabled access routes.

Strong Ground Reinforcement

Bodpave gravel and grass pavers are manufactured specifically to reinforce weak or trafficked ground by transforming loose, unstable surfaces into a robust load-bearing structure.

Rather than merely serving as a surface layer alone, the system utilises a reinforced system within the ground. When a vehicle load is applied, the load is transferred from the tyre into the infill material. The cellular walls then spread this load across the surrounding cells, resulting in pressure being distributed over a much larger footprint rather than concentrating directly beneath the tyre.

This is an excellent way of reducing ground compression and rutting, so softer ground is able to safely support repeated vehicle movements.

Designed for Vehicle Use

The stresses that can be caused by cars and light commercial vehicles are unique, differing significantly from pedestrian traffic. Bodpave systems address these stresses, and the ground issues they cause, by transferring wheel loads through the infill and into the cellular grid. This enables the ground surface to support regular car traffic, stationary loads from parked vehicles, and repeated use, all while protecting the ground itself.

In addition to easy and fast installation, our Bodpave 85 model has a load bearing capacity of up to 400t/m2, making it the ideal solution for everyday commercial use car parks, as well as for driveways and lawn parking. The tried and tested design of the paver has been used to create car parking areas for over 15 years. These paving grids can also be used as a sustainable urban drainage solution.

Permeable and SuDS Compliant

In contrast to impermeable surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, or block paving with sealed joints, Bodpave systems are inherently permeable. This is due to the cellular grids, which contain open voids that are filled with free-draining materials (usually angular gravel or soil).

Once the water has passed through the Bodpave surface, it continues to drain into the underlying layers such as the bedding layer, the granular sub-base, and where conditions allow, the natural ground below. This is a process which mimics natural drainage patterns and slows the speed at which rainwater enters the ground, reducing the risk of surface flooding and pooling,

Low Environmental Impact

Rather than working against natural processes, Bodpave systems work with them. Made from UV-stabilised, recycled polymers, the use of these systems not only reduces plastic waste but also produces a lightweight yet durable product with a long service life.

Traditional driveways can typically rely heavily on cement or asphalt, which is a major source of CO2 emissions. Both materials involve energy-intensive manufacturing and transport which has a negative carbon footprint. In contrast, Bodpave systems don’t require any concrete and are a much more sustainable solution.

Customiseable Finish

For driveways, Bodpave systems act as a structural framework. The visible surface is determined by the infill material, which is typically gravel for driveways. This allows the reinforcement system to be tailored for performance, appearance and environmental goals. The flexibility of Bodpave systems means that the surface can be tailored to traffic levels. Most importantly for driveways, it means that a balance between the durability of permeable driveways and the surface appearance can be achieved.

Why Use Bodpave?

Bodpave systems provide a practical and sustainable solution for reinforcing driveway surfaces while maintaining natural drainage. By combining a strong cellular structure with permeable infill materials, they transform unstable ground  surfaces into durable, load-bearing surfaces that are capable of withstanding regular vehicle use.

Alongside their structural benefits, Bodpave grids support SuDS compliance, reduce environmental impact, and offer a customisable finish that blends seamlessly with surrounding landscapes. For homeowners and commercial spaces alike, they represent a reliable way to create driveways that are both functional and environmentally responsible.
