Requirement: 3,600m2 grass protection for airport car park
Client: NCP
Location: Undisclosed Airport, UK
Introduction
Grassmats Limited had the pleasure of working with car park operator NCP as they sought to install a peak season valeted grass car parking facility at an airport (which we cannot disclose, as agreed with the airport, for security reasons). Due to the increase of bookings during its peak summer months it was deemed a viable option to seek a quick and easy suitable solution, using existing grassed areas to ensure a sustainable and SUDS compliant approach .

Customer Requirements
NCP decided to use a grass maintained area within the Airport Perimeter that needed to be kept as grass, so some form of protective grass mat was required.
Two site visits were conducted; one in the previous year when the enquiry was raised, and another prior to installation during which a formal site report detailing the conditions of the area was created and sent.
Addressing NCP’s Need For Suitable Parking Areas
Our Grass Reinforcement Heavy grass mats were deemed the ideal product to offer this protection, after soil and drainage conditions as well as the expected frequency of use were taken into account. Made from high density polyethylene, this product is no temporary fix, designed to help reinforce grassed areas year round and protect against grass wear for up to twenty years.
A dedicated moffett delivery by R. G. Bassett and Sons Ltd. was organised on-site to simplify the unloading of the equipment, and we ensured we had full health and safety sign off, which included risk assessments and method statements. We worked hard on the laying of the grass protection mats for a sweltering four days on some of the hottest days of the year, and followed up with our client afterwards to ensure they were happy with the installation of the parking mats for grass protection. As part of our service we also included our guidance and recommendation to get the best use out of the product.
Why Reinforcement Grass Mats?
Recognised as a ‘green solution’ our reinforcement grass mats are low in price and high in environmental conscienciousness, manufactured with 100% recycled plastic. Suitable for pedestrian walkways, driveways, wheelchair access routes and lawn parking sites, the unique design of the Grass Reinforcement Mesh mats enables grass to grow back through the mesh while protecting the health of your green shoots.
Benefits of Our Grass Reinforcement Mesh
Thanks to our grass protection mesh installation, NCP now have a car park suitable for accommodating vehicle traffic that can be utilised to offer a premium service during peak times without compromising on grass growth. Installed for a mere fraction of the price which a typical tarmac or gravel parking area would incur, the grassed area now has an impressive capacity of up to 300 valeted parking spaces.
Grass Reinforcement mesh is manufactured to be a fully permeable solution, meaning there was no extra runoff water going into the soil. Designed to become entangled with the grass following installation, the mesh is concealed from view, thereby protecting the grass root structures well as being made from recycled plastics, our grass mat mesh offers a premium level of ground protection with no negative impact on the soils. Just as importantly, the grass parking area remains in tandem with the surroundings and long-term ethos of the airport.
