Issue
Claremont Fan Court School is a co-educational independent school, for pupils from 2½ to 18 years. The school is located on the grounds of the Claremont Estate. Over the past few years there has been seen an ever steadily expanding number of pupils attending the school. This has led to an ever-increasing demand on parking. A particular problem was for the pickup and dropping off area for the pupils. With the lack of suitable sites in the grounds, restrictive planning issues, coupled with the sensitivity of the site, and drainage logistics, hardstanding could not be considered.
Solution
It was agreed, after meetings on site, to use Grass Reinforcement Heavy installed by Grassmats. This was decided after taking into consideration soil and drainage conditions and the expected frequency of use. Also, once the Grass Reinforcement had become entangled with the grass, would become almost invisible. The matting did not need planning and was installed by the Grassmats install team over a few days.
Benefits
The school now has a reinforced grass car parking area which can be used all year round for the pickup and dropping off the pupils. The area now can provide up to 70 car parking spaces and was installed for a fraction of the cost that a traditional tarmac or gravel car park would cost. There was also no extra drainage requirements and no planning difficulties. The grass car park is very much in keeping with the surroundings and the long-term ethos of the school.
