Issue

Bristol Street Motors in Derby, specialising in the Seat Car Range, is located in a compact, busy area of Derby. Car parking space for display, storage and visitors has always been at a premium. There is some grass verges next to the showroom which are is a prime display position next to a main road. The verges could only be used in the warmer months and the grass was also lost during the summer. With its excessive costs, planning issues and drainage logistics, hardstanding could not be considered. With the lack of suitable sites in the grounds, and coupled with the sensitivity of the site a solution needed to be found.

Solution

It was agreed, after meetings on site, to use Grass Reinforcement Heavy installed by Grassmats. This was decided after taking into consideration soil and drainage conditions and the expected frequency of use. Once the Grass Reinforcement becomes entangled with the grass, it would become almost invisible. The mesh will protect the grass root structure and support the weight of the parked cars at the same time. The matting did not need planning and was installed by the Grassmats install team in a day.

Benefits

Bristol Street Motors now have a prime display area for showroom cars that can be used all year round. The cars will not get muddy or will they damage the grassed area. The area now can provide up to an extra 25 display / car parking spaces and was installed for a fraction of the cost that a traditional tarmac or gravel car park would cost. There was also no extra drainage requirements and no planning difficulties. The grass car park is very much in keeping with the surroundings and the long-term ethos of the company.
